West Coast Swing Special Event – August 12, 2017

We are excited to have Marie-Stan Remigereau and Matt Leszcenski teach two west coast swing workshops in Carmel-by-the-Sea at the Carmel Youth Center. Both are All-Star west coast swing competitors. They are also just a really great couple and extremely approachable! Be sure to take both classes as they will be showing us how to incorporate musicality into our dance.

Both workshops are progressive, so you won’t want to miss either. The first workshop starts at 6:30pm. Social dancing begins at 8:00pm. Cost is $10 per person, per class. Or, just $5 if you want to come to just the social dancing.

Below is a video Matt and Marie dancing their west coast swing and being very creative incorporating musicality. See you at the Carmel Youth Center located at 4th and Torres in Carmel-by-the-Sea on Saturday 12, 2017.

Dance Etiquette

west coast swing dance etiquette
If you are just getting started with west coast swing, there are some aspects of this dance that you should familiarize yourself with. The following is a list of items and actions you should mind.

Jewelry
– The dance floor is not the place to show off your bling. It can be dangerous to you and to your partner. Watches, bracelets, rings and even excessive size earrings can be a real hazard.

Shoes – Like any activity, you have to invest a little money in equipment. Shoes can be purchased for $50 to $200 or more. Proper dance shoes have a suede sole. If you’re just getting started and have a pair of closed shoes with leather bottoms, use them until you feel comfortable making an investment in dance shoes.

Be aware also that certain types of shoes should just be left at home altogether, as they have no place in our west coast swing dance environments. If you bring large boots, the kind with thick or solid soles, be aware that these can actually cause harm to your dance partner. Especially if the dance partner is wearing open-toe shoes.

West Coast Swing at the Santa Cruz Swing Club

The Santa Cruz Swing Club Saturday night dance has always been one of my favorite dances. And it still is. When I began dancing west coast swing sometime around 2008,  it was the place to go dancing west coast swing outside of our own local Friday night dance party in Pacific Grove at the old Shall We Dance Ballroom.  Continue reading West Coast Swing at the Santa Cruz Swing Club

Dancing in Oahu at The Study

Jen and I discovered a great place to dance called The Study, located in the Modern. The Modern is a hotel located in Honolulu and walking distance from the hotel we are staying at, called the Equus.

We just finished our day of touring around Oahu visiting different places when we were walking down to get some sundries at a corner store, when Jen noticed the hotel. We decided to go in and check it out. We instantly heard the music coming from behind a book case that appeared to be angled, so that you almost had to sneak around it to see where the music is coming from.

Once past the book case, we saw a bar with a cool, modern looking lounge area with tables, chairs and ottomans. There was also a 3-piece band playing some cool groove music. Jen and I were still in our shorts when we happened upon this and decided we needed to head back to the hotel, put on some pants and get our dance shoes on!

The video here is just a snip of the fun we had while dancing and mingling with the hotel guests! Good times!
